As the year’s end approaches, so does the final recap of the latest NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days edition. In the next weeks, we are going to present evaluation of different aspects of organisation, as well as some pieces of interesting information. As first topic in the series, we are presenting some data on the traffic management, one of the crucial elements for the overall success of the show.

Organizers do everything in their power to ensure the smoothest possible traffic flow to and from the show. Despite all the efforts and especially due to the record-high Saturday’s attendance of 155,000 (by official Police estimates), all access roads were nearing their capacity limits.

That is why organizers promote alternative transportation means to help mitigate road congestions. “Our long-term cooperation with official transporters – Czech Railways and ARRIVA MORAVA - significantly improves traffic at NATO Days. More and more visitors use trains and buses instead of cars,” says Zbyněk Pavlačík, head of Jagello 2000. “Undisputable is also the contribution by the Ostrava Municipal Police with their guarded bike-storages and patrols on nearby bicycle paths, supporting the use of bikes as another smart transportation alternative.

Thanks to the brand new “Mošnov, Ostrava-Airport” railway station next to the airport terminal, for the first time in the show’s history, Czech Railways dispatched extraordinary direct trains to Mošnov. By tradition, some through trains stopped extraordinarily in Studénka as well. Over the weekend, some 9,000 passengers bought tickets to and from the “Mošnov, Ostrava-Airport” station with some 6,000 tickets to/from Studénka. If “regular” traffic is disregarded, we arrive at some 14,000 people who used the Czech Railways trains to come to the show. The real number is even higher, since many passengers used their season/weekend/professional passes and regional integrated system passes. For the first time, the RegioJet trains stopped extraordinarily at Studénka as well. In this company’s estimate, some 800 passengers used this service. We were not able to obtain the LeoExpress train operator data to present the complete picture.

NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days visitors will be able to enjoy Czech Railways services again next year. The special “NATO Days” - labelled trains are already listed in the 2016 Timetable. You can plan your travel at the Czech Railways website.

As many as 5,732 (3,899 on Saturday, 1,833 on Sunday) visitors used the bike storage facilities to leave their bicycles in safety while enjoying the show. In the year-to-year comparison, it is some 20% increase with the same total number of visitors. Thanks to the excellent work by the Ostrava Municipal Police all bike-owners were satisfied and appreciated this service.

Another almost 10,000 passengers used the ARRIVA MORAVA buses to come to the show with 4,652 people travelling from Ostrava and 5,049 from Studénka.
