Larger Bicycle Storages to Support Mobility Week

10.09.2013, 15:34

In cooperation with Ostrava Municipal Police we are again preparing two free of charge guarded bicycle storages in the event’s area. Their capacity will be greatly increased up to 7,500 bicycles. By increasing the capacity we avow to the international project of European Mobility Week and support alternative means of transport.

The first bicycle storage was set up three years ago following demand of the event’s visitors, when the Ostrava Municipal Police, traditional participant of the show since its first year, proposed a system of evidence and safekeeping the bicycles. And it became an instant hit with visitors and a subject of praise. “Our great thanks belong to the officers of the Ostrava Municipal Police, who have been operating the bicycle storages since 2010 and they are its guarantors. Now we have two such zones in the area,” Pavel Boháč, the leader of NATO Days in Ostrava project from the Jagello 2000 Association, which organizes NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days, notes.

The bicycle storages are located next to entry gates no. 1 and 2 and they are marked in the map of the area. The fact that the area is located just next to the so called “Amber Trail”, the international bike trail no. 5 Kraków-Morava-Vienna, adds to the great demand for the storages. The trail goes through Ostrava, therefore the officers also monitor the trail between the city and the airport. “The Ostrava Municipal Police’s officers on bicycles watch over safety of the cyclists. It is possible that their service might go unnoticed by some of cyclists, but in the whole context the involvement of the corps is very important,” Pavel Boháč explains.

Not of lesser importance is the role of the Statutory City of Ostrava itself, thanks to which activities NATO Days in Ostrava can avow to the international project European Mobility Week with their campaign “To NATO Days in Ostrava by bicycle!”. “We have been promoting alternative means of transport for a long time. We closely cooperate with the Czech Railways, we support hiking through Poodří Preserve and the mentioned cycling. Also by means of the possibility to use the free of charge bicycle guarding we would like to provide for up to 7,500 cyclists,” Pavel Boháč reminds.

According to Boháč it is about increasing comfort of the visitors, which however brings increased financial costs. “We are therefore very glad that the bicycle storages initiative has been supported by one of the event’s partner, the Johnny Servis company, from the very beginning,” Boháč notes. It is the barriers of this company that serve as key elements of the locker zones.

Finally we have to note that just as with car parking, even with the bicycle storages some traffic jams can occur. “Even in spite of this year’s significant boost the officers cannot change the speed of bicycle check-in, especially if cyclists arrive in larger groups. If we want to maintain the standards, and it is in the interest of cyclists to leave the event with the same bike they arrived on, then the cyclists have to be tolerant to the way and speed of the check-in, which cannot be fooled,” Boháč closes with a bit of exaggeration and a smile.
