Hungarian Gripen after eight years in the air

23.02.2018, 13:03

Hungary is another country that has confirmed its participation in this year's NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. Its air force will send the JAS-39 Gripen fighter jet for a dynamic display at Mošnov Airport.

JAS-39 Gripen of the Hungarian Air Force is a common guest at Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport, however, mostly in the form of a static display. Only during its first participation, visitors could have seen it in the air, but now the aircraft will repeat the dynamic display after eight years.

“Hungarian Gripen should have performed last year, unfortunately, its participation was changed only to a static display. We believe that the dynamic display will go through this year and visitors will thus have a chance to compare the skills of both the Hungarian and Czech pilot,” says Zbyněk Pavlačík, the chairman of Jagello 2000.

JAS-39 Gripen is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft whose design comes from previous models of the Saab company, mainly the Saab 37 Viggen which can be considered its direct predecessor. It has a great manoeuvrability and requires only a short runway thanks to the delta-wing and canard configuration. It also presents these attributes during the displays.

Hungary as well as the Czech Republic has leased the aircraft from Sweden and these three countries are the only European operators of these fighter jets. Both the Hungarian Air Force and the Czech Air Force operate 14 aircraft, 12 single-seaters and two twin-seater trainers. Both countries also decided to extend the original lease, so Gripens will serve in the Hungarian Air Force at least until 2026.
