Two Exclusive Displays of Czech Army’s Capabilities – In-Flight Refuelling and Loading of Ruslan

10.09.2013, 10:00

13th NATO Days in Ostrava & 4th Czech Air Force Days are going to offer two more highly attractive dynamic displays. The Swedish Air Force is going to send their KC-130 tanker, which is going to present an in-flight refuelling display together with Czech Air Force JAS-39 Gripen fighters. The Army of the Czech Republic is going to offer a unique display of loading of the giant An-124 Ruslan transport aircraft.

“Thank to a long time cooperation of Sweden and the Czech Republic we were able to arrange the highly attractive display of in-flight refuelling. The visitors could see this display last year, when the simulated connection was displayed by a Czech Gripen and French C-135FR tanker,” Col. Libor Štefánik, the Commander of the Czech Air Force, said.

The Swedish KC-130 tanker is a specially configured C-130 Hercules aircraft with gear for in-flight refuelling. It is capable of providing fuel for two aircraft at a time. It was this Swedish plane that the Czech Gripen pilots were training with when the in-flight refuelling capability was added last year. The Swedish tanker will be parked near static displays after the dynamic display every day, so you will be able to see it from up close.

The very first in-flight refuelling of the Czech Air Force was conducted by pilots from the 21st Tactical Air Force Base Čáslav on February 28, 2012 in Swedish Renneby under guidance of Swedish instructors. Only Polish fighters with their F-16s were able to refuel in-flight before that in the whole Central Europe. The Czech Air Force therefore advanced to another level. In-flight refuelling is necessary for involvement in NATO air operations.

Another piece of news is display of loading of the giant An-124 Ruslan aircraft, about which participation we informed earlier. The Army of the Czech Republic is going to present 3 transport containers, automobile crane AD30 and a container loader near the aircraft, which will allow for understanding the Ruslan’s transport options and ways of loading an unloading cargo. “Besides this static display, on Saturday and on Sunday at 10 and 14 o’clock there are going to be dynamic display of wheeled armoured transport Pandur driving in and out of Ruslan,” Colonel Štefánik added with a note that the general public will be able to see this display for the first time.

“These are two very practical displays, which show activities of our soldiers, and in cooperation with our foreign partners. We greatly thank the Army of the Czech Republic and the Swedish Air Force for allowing us the opportunity to offer these displays and we hope you will like them,” Zbyněk Pavlačík, the chairman of the Jagello 2000 Association, which is the main organizer of the show, closed.
