NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days

NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days 2013 will offer another spectacular display. The Swedish Air Force Historical Flight will present its Saab AJS 37 Viggen and J29 Tunnan aircraft. In case of the Tunnan, it will be the type’s first ever presentation in the Czech Republic.

“We believe the visitors will appreciate this Swedish participation, since it is very rare in the whole Central and Eastern Europe,” comments Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000, the NATO Days in Ostrava main organizing agency.

Change: Swedish Historical Flight Will Send AJS 37 Viggen and Saab 105

“The Viggens had not been quite an uncommon sight here even as late as in the 1990s before they have been replaced by the Gripens. But the Tunnan will be displayed in the Czech Republic for the first time ever if one does not count an accident landing of two Austrian Air Force Tunnans near Prague in October 1964”, adds Jan Čadil, editor-in-chief of the Aviation+Cosmonautics magazine.

Saab 29 Tunnan, known in Sweden as the flying barrel (Flygande tunnan) was a jet aeroplane produced between 1950-58. Despite its round shape, it was fast and agile – great for dogfight and for chasing bombers.

Saab 37 Viggen (“Thunderbolt” in Swedish) is a multirole fighter plane capable of operating from short runways and possessing bomber, fighter and reconnaissance capabilities. The Viggens were withdrawn as late as 2005.

The Swedish Air Force Historic Flight is an organization that operates and maintains in airworthy conditions the discontinued aircraft of the Swedish Air Force. At the moment, the SWAFHF comprises 13 airplanes, among them the Draken twin seater, Hawker Hunter, Vampire, training Saab Safir or the Alouette helicopter, in addition to the Viggen and Tunnan.
