Exclusive premiere of Norwegian DA-20 and return of Orion

27.04.2018, 13:42

This year's NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days will host another Scandinavian participant. The Royal Norwegian Air Force will present at static display its DA-20 Falcon and P-3 Orion as the former will debut in Mošnov.

Norway's last participation in NATO Days took place in 2016 when it presented its P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft for the first time. This year, the Royal Norwegian Air Force prepared not only comeback of this aircraft, but also a premiere of DA-20 Falcon.

“Norway does not come to our event regularly as its representatives have appeared here only three times so far. Additionally, P-3 Orion nor DA-20 Falcon are presented at public events very often due to their operational requirements. We are thus grateful that Norway will commemorate with these aircraft the 100th anniversary or Czechoslovakia's independence and its armed forces,“ emphasizes Zbyněk Pavlačík, chairman of Jagello 2000. “Alongside with Denmark and Finland, there will be three Scandinavian participants, such occasion could have been seen once in 2014. It would definitely be amazing to welcome a complete Scandinavian group.”

DA-20 Falcon manufactured by Dassault Aviation has been primarily used for electronic warfare in the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Its tasks include calibration of navigation- and geo-localising radar systems as well as training of national and allied forces in this type of warfare. DA-20 Falcon also provides transport for the state representatives including the Royal Family, the Defence Minister and the Chief of Defence.

On the other hand, P-3 Orion was specifically developed for maritime surveillance and submarine detection, which is enabled by magnetic anomaly detector located in the distinctive tail stinger. Detected submarines can be destroyed by torpedoes or sea mines placed in the fuselage. Thanks to its capabilities, P-3 Orion can also be used for support of ground troops or environment and natural resources monitoring.

Due to the aging fleets of these aircraft, Norway has already chosen their successor - the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from the United States. Five of them should be delivered to Norway between 2021 and 2022.
