Premiere dynamic display of Prague Castle Guard
There will be tight ground display programme at NATO Days in Ostrava besides a rich aerial display programme. One of the ground displays will be a premiere dynamic display of the Castle Guard motorcycle platoon.
“The participation of the Castle Guards naturally pleases us. It is an unique military unit, because it is the most visible for the public of the military units,” Zbyněk Pavlačík, the chairman of the Jagello 2000 Asssocation, said. “Therefore we are glad that it will present itself to the visitors of NATO Days in Ostrava in a dynamic display of one of its interesting duties,” he added.
The Castle Guard is a part of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, however it stands outside of the structure of the Army and it is directed by the Military office of the President. It is a brigade-sized unit with 610 soldiers serving in it. It consists of HQ and staff, two patrol battalions, the Castle Guard Band and a support company. The motorcycle platoon is a part of the support company and it will present itself in dynamic and also at static display at NATO Days in Ostrava.
The main task of the Castle Guard motorcycle platoon is to conduct motorcycle escort of the President and highest dignitaries of foreign countries during their official reception by the President or the Prime Minister. To fulfil its tasks, the motorcycle platoon uses different versions of modified BMW motorcycles, suitable for riding in regular traffic or in difficult terrain.
The Castle Guard is specific in comparison with other military units, because the guardsmen have to fulfil specific criteria to join the unit besides the regular criteria for ordinary soldiers. They have to be between 178 and 188 centimetres tall, they cannot have facial hair, visible cosmetic defects, piercing, tattoos, and earrings and so on.
