B-52 Stratofortress arriving for the third time!

20.07.2012, 12:46

For the third time in a row, the legendary US B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber from the USAFR Barksdale AFB, LA, will participate at NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. A C-130H Hercules cargo plane is coming as well in support of the bomber.

“We are very glad that this Cold War icon is slowly becoming a one-of-a-kind NATO Days in Ostrava icon as well,” says Zbyněk Pavlačík from the Jagello 2000 Association. “B-52 is a really extraordinary machine and we consider it a great appreciation by the US side that we are the only event in Central Europe where the plane is displayed for the third time in a row now. Moreover, we are still discussing with US Air Force Reserve commanders a possible extended form of their participation.”

UPDATE: There are two B-52 Stratofortress aircraft coming to NATO Days - one for static and one for flyin display
This year's programme reaching a grand finale: US Air Force to make a B-52 flight display! (22 Aug, 2012)

The B-52 bomber has been in service with the US Air Force since 1955. There are no plans for early retirement, quite the contrary. Thanks to its quality, low operating costs and timeless construction design, the plans envisage the type to remain operational at least till 2040. Today, the legendary B-52 is among three types of pure bomber aircraft in the USAF inventory, the other two types being the B-1B Lancer and the B-2 Spirit. The B-52 excels thanks to its reliability, endurance, long range and heavy-payload and has been used in missions over Iraq and Afghanistan in recent time.

Same as last year, the B-52 will be accompanied by a cargo C-130H Hercules plane from the Niagara Falls AFB. There have been three types of the Hercules family displayed last year, this year the Niagara Falls plane seems to be the only one.

Participation of the US Air Force Europe has been concluded. Despite some expectations, the F-16s from Aviano, Italy are joining the already announced KC-135 and F-15E, all headed for static display. It will be the Aviano´s first appearance at Ostrava.
